In the case of a swearing-in in a person swears an oath. Of an affirming by oath against it one speaks if persons become insured generally, statements and appraisals "by oath". The linguistic usage is completely non-uniform.

Are sworn in usually (with in each case the circumstances corresponding an oath formula):

  • the witnesses during a court process,
  • the owners of high political offices, in some countries even all officials,
  • Policeman and member of the armed forces (see below),
  • in some countries all persons, who attain the nationality of the country concerned, so e.g. in the USA.

The swearing-in in becomes by the repetition of the oath formula or by their confirmation with the words "I swears it!" (if necessary with the religious confirmation "so truely God help me" decided).

The swearing-in in before court the witness cannot resist usually. (Objections could be the relationship/affinity to the accused and/or a party or a preceeding condemnation because of perjury).

Swearing-in in in armed forces

The soldiers of most countries placing an oath to defend their country and to obey the instructions of their superiors. In armed forces of the democratic states the oath formula contains usually also of confessions for constitutional order and to the right nationalness.
