SKF (schwed. S'venska Kullagerfabriken) is round a Swedish company with an extensive product and service assortment around the ranges antifriction bearing, seals, lubrication, Mechatronik (linear systems, Aktuatorik) and by the subsidiary Ovako Steel also in the range special steel. The 'SKF OFF (Aktiebolag) has about 39,000 employees in 70 countries (2004). The conversion amounted to 2004 44.83 billion sec. (about 4.9 billion euro).

Enterprise history

SKF was created 1907 in in order to use the self-aligning (ball) bearing, an invention of Swedish engineer Sven Wingqvist, industrially. The enterprise grew fast, and 1918 had SKF 12,000 employees in 12 factories in different countries. In the following years further ball and roller bearings were developed.

1926 were created also the subsidiary Volvo OFF, the test cars manufactured and 1935,1929 German taper roller bearing works were bought independently and 1931 production in pig ford, Stuttgart bath CAN place and (starting from 1960) concentrated. Further developments like the self-aligning roller thrust bearing 1940 and further special camps contributed to further growth. In the past years the SKF company changes its business field more and more and develops from the antifriction bearing manufacturer to a prominent offerer of products and services approximately around the propulsion technology.

The acquisition of enterprises within different ranges of the propulsion technology, of steel plants as well as SKF makes the formation of joint undertakings in China starting from 1995 the enterprise within many ranges, leading world-wide.
