Suzuki is a Japanese manufacturer of motorcycles, cars and outboard motors. It is world-wide after Honda of largest exporters for motorcycles and has its Germany seat in Bensheim.

Development/firm history

The enterprise founder Michio Suzuki was born on 10 February 1887 in close proximity to Hamamatsu, about 200 km southwest from Tokyo.

There it created 1909 an enterprise for the production of looms. This expanded rapidly, and 1920 followed the course to the stock exchange as Suzuki Loom Manufacturing CO. At this time there were quite efforts Suzukis to develop its own automobile - Japan was at that time in the vehicle range extremely backward opposite Europe and America, and the demand to motor vehicles in the own country rose. 1936 bought Michio Suzuki a "Austin 7". With its engineers it divided the British automobile and studied it exactly, whereupon they developed a prototype, which they presented in the following to year 1937.

Still further vehicles were built, the production was changed over however soon to war production, whereby in Japan the manufacturing was not strongly limited "more vital" goods. The vehicle projects were let for the time being fall. Already 1937 produced Suzuki ammunition for the imperial army. In the subsequent years there were increasingly military orders, Suzuki became part of the military of complex.

During 2. World war many production mechanisms were destroyed and the production was shifted on other ranges. After end of war Suzuki manufactured among other things agricultural machinery and heaters.

Development after that 2. World war

In June 1952 Suzuki presented its first motorcycle, with to 36 ccm engine propelled bicycle named power Free. The engine of the power Free was available also without bicycle and carried 1 HP out. In the March of the subsequent year 1953 those appeared followed dia. moon free (60 ccm engine and 2 HP), of the mini Free 1954. The first "correct" motorcycle was the Colleda with 90 ccm four-stroke engine with 3 HP, which was presented in May 1954. It was innovative for conditions at that time and oriented themselves strongly at European models. Soon there was the Colleda even with larger engines.

In the meantime the business with motorcycles for Suzuki was so important that the company renamed itself 1954 in Suzuki engine company. In the same year production was stopped by looms.

In the year 1955 one presented the first successful small cars with the Suzulight (360 ccm, 2-Zylinder). With this vehicle Suzuki could for the first time correctly gain a foothold on the automobile sector.

Soon one began with the international expansion. Thus 1963 became the US-American marketing company Suzuki engine Corp. in Los Angeles based. Thus the important US-American market was opened.

Further important milestones were among other things:

  • 1965 presented the D55 to Suzuki, an outboard motor to the boat drive with 5,5 HP and 2-Zylindern.
  • Since 1969 becomes motorcycles in Germany driven out, in addition since 1980 automobiles on the German market are offered.
  • In the year 1976 the gs series are introduced. Basis is the development of the gs 650 E. with the introduction of the 4 clock engines the 2 Takter from the program was as far as possible taken. Only in the Motocrossbereich still two-stroke engines are manufactured.
  • With the first Quad, which was "LT 125", which was developed 1982 and 1983 on the market came, Suzuki pioneer of a new market.
  • 1984 present Suzuki on the international bicycle and to motorcycle exhibition in Cologne the GSX-R 750 forwards, which contributed like hardly another the motorcycle development.
  • In October 1990 the Firmierung in Suzuki engine corporation changed.
