Supplier Managed Inventory (SMI, German: ) The consumption controlled supply of the manufacturer with material designates supplier led inventory management. The Vorlieferant, is here responsible for the existence and/or filling the manufacturer camp. SMI resembles thereby very strongly that VMI, only that the view direction at the beginning of the creation of value chain goes (direction primary production) and not as with the VMI for the end of the creation of value chain (direction final customer). The difference lies thus in the fact that here not the manufacturer dealer, but the supplier manufacturer relationship is affected.

One could also say that from the view of the supplier each SMI concept is a VMI concept and turned around.

The advantages are in:

• Decrease of the order procedures
• Higher process security
• Improves/closer supplier customer relationship (and in reverse)
• improves reaction to need fluctuations
• Reduction of the stocks with the manufacturer
• Decrease of the transaction and overhead costs by omission of order processes and unique monthly account (instead of many individual invoices)
