Sunao Tawara (native Nakajima; * 5. July 1873 in the province Oita, Japan; "† 1952 in Japan) were a Japanese pathologist, who investigated substantial fundamentals of the excitation line system of the heart and after that the Tawara thighs is designated.

1903 terminated Tawara its medicine study at the imperial University of Tokyo and traveled at own expense to Germany, in order to form until 1906 with the Marburger pathologist Ludwig Aschoff in pathology and pathological anatomy further. From this time a multiplicity of scientific work originates to the excitation line system and to the heart myasthenia. Its work over the AV-knot (also Aschoff Tawara knot) and the Tawara thighs was after discovery of his bundle by William His a further important step to understand the excitation line in the heart.

After its return to Japan Tawara was appointed 1906 as the extraordinary professor of the imperial University of Kyoto and appointed 1908 as the full professor for pathology of the University of Fukuoka.

After its retirement 1934 Tawara was active as an executive committee of the medical faculties of the University of Kyushu and the University of Kyoto.
