A goal of the success research is the identification of successful own or strange problem solution conceptions. The success research in the industry studies of the 1960er finds the origin years.
Different main points of research can be differentiated:
- internal success research on the basis data
- external success research on the basis of unternehmensexternener data as for example business reports. Here again industry-referred (e.g. PIMS concept) is to be differentiated from industry-spreading projects (e.g. Benchmarkingstudien).
On the basis so-called success factors substantial measured variables are to be found out on the entrepreneurial success. In addition belong for example productivity, market position, market growth, product quality, innovation and differentiation, vertical integration, rising costses and strategy.
The success research is disputed despite large empririscher studies and numerous projects. This is in particular because of the causality problem and the mechanistical viewpoint:
- No individual variables can be identified, which are causal for the entrepreneurial success; rather different factors play a role;
- The results of the success research suggest procedural instructions, e.g. "increase the market share, thus over smaller costs of profitability one increases"; Enterprises are however social things, whose soft factors can not be measured such as management quality, Unternehmenskultur, knowledge etc.
- If there were a "success prescription", then each enterprise would have to be successful.
