The Subaru L-series (Leone also admits II or L1800 as Leone,) is an automobile of the center class with standard all-wheel drive, which was offered in Germany from 1984 to 1992. For the time at that time the vehicles possessed an outstanding standard in the comparison to the competition and the GL-variant could in this regard with the upper middle class compete.

Naming

Contrary to the US-American and Japanese market, the Subaru Leone was never sold in Germany as Leone. Therefore there are some discrepancies in the product designation. Actually the Leone was manufactured and sold from 1971 to 1994 in different model variants in Japan. In the USA the vehicle was sold from 1971 to 1989 as Leone, afterwards until 1994 as Loyale, in Japan continuous as Leone.

Since Subaru Germany only 1980 was created, before this time officially no Subaru vehicles in Germany were offered. The Leone model at that time was sold from 1980 to 1984 as 1600 or 1800 (actually Leone I with engine code EA81), offered starting from 1984 then the new model as L-series (actually Leone II with engine code EA82) under the name L1800. In the German KFZ papers the still kryptischere name "Lac" emerges for the and Sedan and "Lank" for the combination models. Generally one speaks however however in Germany of the L-series.

Engine/drive

The L-series possesses a water-cooled 4-Zylinder-OHV-Boxermotor with 1769cm capacity. Because of different remarks of the always same engine (e.g. carburetor or electronic motor control with and without catalyst) and the vehicle, engine performance varies between 66 and 72 KW. In addition there was still another variant with turbo-loaded engine (engine code EA82T) and thus 100 KW, which in the Subaru XT one used.

As transmission a 5-Gang-Schaltgetriebe and a 3-Gang-Automatikgetriebe were offered, starting from 1988 a 4-Gang-Automatikgetriebe.

That series all wheel is connected with the connecting all wheel models with a manual hand lever or with negative pressure by push of a button. Besides there is all wheel with reduction for Sedan and superstation and/or an electronic 4-Gang automatic transmission with ACT4 starting from 1988 in the turbo-models permantenen. With the manual variant and the Permant Allrad there is still another additional reduction for area travels. In addition a rear Sperrdifferenzial was optionally available.

Besides the turbo-models were equipped with pneumatic pneumatic cushioning (as with the Subaru XT), while the normal models possess McPherson shock struts at the front and rear axle. Further these models possess ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear axle, while the normal models possess these only in front and in the back for it drum brakes.

The models with transmission possess the so-called Hill Holder. This is a back roll brake, which keeps the brake pressure upright when stopping at upward gradients also if the driver takes the foot of the brake pedal. The brake is only released when renewed starting again. Rolling back the vehicle at upward gradients is avoided by this system and thus starting is facilitated.

Equipment

As equipment variants there was the L1800 DL and GL in each case as sedan (Sedan and combination (station or also superstation). The equipment variant DL had electrically adjustable side mirrors and a headlight washer, but e.g. none sun oh, electrical window lifters or Klimaanlage.Die equipment variant GL had electrically adjustable side mirrors, a headlight washer, a solenoid operated sun oh, Zentralverriegelung and electrical window lifters in the back and in front. An air conditioning system was optionally available.

Additionally there were still some special models with higher roof and like.

As the further characteristic the L-series - like all Subaru vehicles - possesses a large status display in the instrument panel, on which the most important everyday procedures in and at the vehicle are indicated: open doors, eingeschaltenes (far from) light, act fourth all wheel and other one.

Reliability

Like all Subaru vehicles also the L-series applies generally as reliable. The mechanics and electronics are very durably laid out. Wearing parts can be changed relatively fast and simply.

The body is notorious only for its strong rust susceptibility in the range of the rear wheel arches and the Schweller. With the last models at the beginning of the 1990er was however strongly improved this, so that also in these places no more excessive corrosion arises.

Successor

Originally the Subaru Legacy was intended as successors for the L-series, however Subaru changed the concept and in such a way became the Subaru Impreza of the successors in the compact class.
