Studebaker was an US-American daring and car manufacturer. The enterprise was created on 16 February 1852 and withdrew themselves 1966 from the motorring industry.

Early history

Henry Studebaker was Farmer, hoof-forges and car manufacturers, in early 19. Century in close proximity to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania lived. Up to the year 1840 it had moved to Ohio and to its five sons the Wagnerhandwerk had taught. They all followed it into the business.

Clement and Henry Jr. became hoof hufschmiede and joint founders of South Bend (Indiana). First they manufactured metal parts for Frachtwagen and took care of later the manufacturing of complete cars. John manufactured cars in Californien and Peter in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The first larger expansion of their business was due to the demand produced by California gold fever 1849.

When gold fever faded away, John returned to Indiana and bought up Henrys portion of the business. They brought in its youngest brother Jacob also and created 1852 the enterprise. The next expansion was the result of the supply of cars for the union Army in the American civil war.

After the slogan give ever more than you promise organized themselves it to 1868 to the Studebaker Brother's Manufacturing company over. At this time the railway and steam ship enterprises already dominated the freight traffic in the east. Thus they concentrated on private customers and Farmer.

On the high point of the development of the west and the covered wagon columns were totally or partly built by Studebaker half of the cars: They built and supplied a quarter the metal fittings for a further quarter to other manufacturers to Missouri.

Automobile production from 1897 to 1966

Already in the year 1897 Studebaker was occupied with motor vehicles, however they worked with electric motors. The enterprise was received a sales agreement with Everett butcher Flanders (EMF); EMF manufactured the vehicles and Studebaker sold it over its car dealers. By problems with EMF the cars became however ever more unreliable, so that the vernacular fixed it with EMF of "Every Morning", spoke dt. each morning to repair. J.M. Studebaker was dissatisfied with the unsatisfactory quality of EMF and provided 1910 control of the enterprise. In order to good-close the damage of EMF again, Studebaker paid for altogether one million US Dollar mechanic, who came to dissatisfied customers home and replaced defective parts in the vehicles. In addition Studebaker let provide the cars with the own name, on the one hand as insurance for good quality and as obligation for the success of the auto+'s building and - sales. In the year 1911 the enterprise in Studebaker corporation designated itself over.

Beside cars Studebaker began to manufacture also truck, which displaced gradually the horse-pulled cars. Studebaker was 1926 the first US-American car manufacturer, that opened a controlled test track.

1937 planted the enterprise 5,000 Kiefern in a sample, which resulted in the word of STUDEBAKER from over there-flying airplanes seen.

Of the 1920er up to the 1960er years the company from South Bend many stylistic and technical milestones brought out, among them the classical Studebaker President (1929-1932) and the Studebaker champion of 1939. Studebaker built models, which addressed and its need of mobility cover could the average American.

Rising labour costs (it gave a strike of the automobile trade union with Studebaker and was never the wages and pension contributions the highest in the industry) together with problems with quality control and the new autowar between Ford and General of engine into the early 1950er years led however to the fact that the financial situation worsened. Professional financial advisers guessed/advised to concentrate rather on short term incomes instead of following a long-term vision. Enough reserves were present for further ten years, but hard competition and Preisdumping by the three large car manufacturers condemned the enterprise to the fall.

In hope, and was called market position to stabilize to be able, fused Studebaker stops the downtrend 1954 with luggage pool of broadcasting corporations, the new enterprise Studebaker Packard corporation. Studebakers financial situation was substantially worse, than luggage pool of broadcasting corporations it believes to make wanted and 1958 brought to that nearly bankruptcies car manufacturers therefore a management team of the aircraft manufacturer Curtiss WRIGHT into the enterprise. 1958 stepped out luggage pool of broadcasting corporations of co-operation and became US-American agency for Mercedes Benz, whereupon many Studebaker dealers sold also to their cars.

Financial obligations dictated that new models develop like the small car Studebaker Lark (1959) and the sports car Studebaker Avanti (1963) on old body and engine Designs, which could not stop however the loss series. In December 1963 the enterprise gave the enterprises up in South Bend and sold the mark Avanti at Nate Altman, who continued the production of the car under the name Avanti II there. The vehicle production was shifted Ontario, to the last remaining still remaining location in Hamilton, where Studebaker produced by May 1966, before they withdrew themselves from the sector.

Many Studebaker dealers changed to it to Mercedes Benz. The test areas were bought by the earlier supplier Bendix corporation, which for use than park to the vehicles management in pc. Joseph County, Indiana gave away properties later. As condition for the donation the park received Bendix Woods to the names.

After 1966 Studebaker of far as closed Investment group, whose incomes she scooped from various subsidiaries, among them STP, Gravely Tractor, Onan Electric of generator and Clarke Floor Machine existed. Studebaker was bought up 1967 by Wagner Electric. Afterwards they fused with the word hanging clay/tone corporation and formed Studebaker Worthington, before this 1979 were acquired by McGraw Edison. McGraw Edison was then bought even 1985 by Cooper Industries, which repelled however all its automobile ranges some years later at Federal Mogul.
