Structure crisis an economic situation is called, in which production and/or offer capacities exceeds the demand in substantial size. Structure crises can individual enterprises, industries or regions concern, in addition, people and world-economical extents accept. In this case one speaks also of overproduction crisis. The outstanding feature of a structure crisis is the long-term (structural) decrease in demand. A lasting difference between demand and supply can have several causes:

  • Structure and preservation of need-exceeding production capacities,
  • need-exceeding productivity increases, e.g. by introduction of new technologies and progressive automation,
  • changed consumer behaviour of the consumers,
  • changed investment behavior of the economy or the state,
  • superior substitution competition, e.g. by new products, cheap imported goods, etc.

Necessary structural adjustments of larger extent produce positive feedbacks in the case of crisis, in particular on the job market. Develops additional unemployment, which intensifies the crisis situation and if necessary to other enterprises, industries or larger economic sectors lets it spread. In the context of the social free-market economy it is therefore one of the most important tasks of the State of, the economical basic conditions by means of economics, financial and sociopolitical to arrange generally structure-political measures in such a way that such structural adjustments are not promptly intercepted to mass unemployment to lead or.

In economiceconomics regard structure crises often come out from mono structures and to lead to economic and social problems of whole regions, in which the economy was aligned exclusive or predominantly to a branch of industry. Example is the steel crisis in the seventies, which the Ruhr district many jobs cost, and it into one to today continuous structure crisis led. This phenomenon arises in many old-industrialized areas. Beside the Ruhr district is thus e.g. also in North England and in the Manufactoring Belt in the USA the case. One speaks then also of regional policy approximately concerning the earlier zone peripheral areas.

The way from the structure crisis is the structural change.
