The term stroke and Spoke is used in different connections. It is meant with the fact in all cases that the connection between two end nodes A and B not directly, but over a central knot Z, the stroke (English: Hub is led). One calls the connections of the end nodes A, B to the knot Z here Spokes (English: Spokes). A way of a knot A within the range of the stroke Z1 to a knot B within the range of the stroke Z2 from A leads to Z1 after Z2 and then after B even if the connection A after B more briefly and were technically feasible.

Stroke and Spoke in the transportation

Overview

By stroke and Spoke one understands to be able to serve a star shaped arrangement of routes of transportation, whereby all this on one and/or from a central junction into all directions run, in the transportation in order the surface (star topology).

Application found this system end of the 1970er-Jahre in the commercial air freight traffic within the USA. Reason for it was and is bundlings of traffic streams and the appropriate demand, so that it comes to the optimization of extent of utilization of the assigned transport vehicles, as empty travels or empty flights are avoided. The law of the fixed cost degression is used by the system, thus cost saving contrary to the use of Point-to-Point (direct connections). A disadvantage of this system is that the route of transportation extends contrary to an on-line mode from point A to point B.

Of importance this system is with nearly all means of transport:

  • Maritime traffic, whereby it is indirectly used there with Feederverkehren
  • Air freight traffic, e.g. with the large courier express package service (KEP services) like UPS or the German post office. At the German post office Frankfurt/Main is used as a stroke for the air freight traffic.
  • Railway passenger traffic: mainly in long-distance traffic concentration on the connections between the airport locations and associated quiet putting of shorter direct Fernverbindungen (example: Hagen - Frankfurt/Main over Cologne instead of so far victories - pouring) and therefore uncoupling also such larger cities of the long-distance traffic by rail with suburban traffic with shorter Laufwegen and additional stops of the individual courses, remaining on the direct distances, also therefore additionally necessary transferring as well as price of transportation computation exclusively over the stroke also on use of the shorter direct distance; in addition quiet putting of shorter, in close proximity to stroke, but transverse to these lying distances;
  • Rail goods traffic: both in single carload lot traffic with concentration on very few marshalling yards as stroke and with container traffics in combined traffic.
  • Road haulage, with all Sammelgutspeditionunternehmen, in order to be able to offer in Germany a 24h transport and European-wide a 48h transport.
  • Paketdienstleister represent a further area of application. Here the packages in-collected in the Nebenlauf in the depots are consolidated in the so-called Hauptlauf and changed over a stroke. The spokes (Spoke) represent thus the connections of the stroke to the depots. Usually one finds however a combination of the two network alternatives, depots with a high wechelseitigen relationship by a high package arising between the two usually by Point-to-Point connections, also on-line modes is connected, by the stroke runs with one another mentioned above all those packages, whose sender or receiver depots does not constitute complete truck charges.

Also systems with several stroke, which are again connected by means of on-line modes among themselves, are possible. An example for this would be the network of GLS Germany, the abbreviation "ZUP" stands for central transition point and is equivalent to stroke.

In the road passenger traffic is stroke and Spoke procedure almost insignificantly, there the driver usually the shortest distance (if necessary with smaller detours over motorways instead of highways) drives.

Stroke and Spoke in commercial passenger aviation

The stroke Spoke procedure used close course all large Verkehrsflugesellschaften for all their flights. Exception thereby into the 1980er years arisen are and for the 90's boom-end so-called cheap airlines, which offer Point-to-Point to largest part.

The procedure has historical (air traffic rights), in addition, economic existence authorization.

The stroke is used of the air traffic companies mostly also as homeland basis, where aircraft becomes waited, stationed etc..

By the stroke and Spoke procedure it is in relation to the Point-to-Point possible, a by far larger number of connections, however with according to more frequent transfer necessity to offer:

In a system of n airports, exclusive central of a spider result:

With Hub&Spoke traffic:

n connections

With exclusive P-P traffic:

(n - 1) + (n - 2) +"Â… + 1 connections

or also

[n * (n - 1)] /2

That means in a concrete example of n=10:

H&S: 10 connections (with n=10 airports plus 1 stroke)

P-P: 9 + 8 +"Â… + 2 + 1 = 45 connections (with n=10 airports without stroke)

or also

[10 * (9)] /2 = 45 (with n=10 airports without stroke)

Stroke and Spoke in computer science

Enterprise Application integration

As stroke and Spoke architecture or hub and spoke architecture in computer science one designates a form of the integration by business functions on the basis of message exchange or service inquiries with the all data traffic over a central integration platform is led. It is one of the possible topologies for the Enterprise Application integration. One speaks here also of the Business bus, whereby the terms are not completely synonymous.

Network technology

In the network technology the star topology plays a substantial role in cross-linking by Twisted Pair wirings. The individual nodes are connected in each case with central stroke or Switches, which is for their part again among themselves connected. The term stroke in the network technology is used primarily for a certain type of device for the central nodes. This type of device plays however in larger nets or with reconstruction a role subordinated by nets and as far as possible by Switches is only replaced. The net topology does not change thereby however, so that Switches topologically seen likewise stroke are, only that it the connections after the first structure faster repair can.

Telefonie

Telephone networks are likewise as far as possible in form of a stroke and Spoke topology developed. the switching centers and telephone systems form stroke and the terminals the Spokes. Within the range of the digital Telefonie on basis of ISDN gives it in addition, bus architectures.
