The star OF Life is the international indication of mechanisms of the emergency service.

It consists of a cross formed from three bars in blue color on white background, in the center is a in white color.

Meaning

The six ends of the star stand for the six primary tasks of the emergency service:

• Snaps arrival at the emergency place
• Situation investigation
• Situation message to the directing center
• Lead-in supply of patients locally
• Re-supply on transport
• Professional transport into a suitable hospital

History

The star OF Life was developed 1973 by Leo R. Schwartz for the US-American national Highway Traffic Safety administration, whose emergency service department he led at the time. Schwartz, even Jew, took the hexagonal blue David star to the model. Reason for it was a complaint of the US-American red cross, which saw its rights impaired by the past use of an orange cross on all rescue means. On 1 February 1977 the star OF Life was registered by the American Medical Association as protected registered trade mark.

In Germany the star OF Life is protected despite its international meaning as symbol for the emergency service, of the trade association of private emergency services registered association (UC), formerly Federal association of independent emergency services registered association, under the register numbers 2032229 and 2103438 as collective mark. It may be used therefore only by organizations, the member in this federation is. The UC proceeds consistently against the injury of his trademark laws.
