The stand-by was until 1953 a special official-legal position in Germany.
Into the stand-by officials could be shifted on time or to lifetime, their agency were dissolved, with another folded up or in the structure substantially changed. Officials could be shifted only three months after this change into the stand-by.
The official was further a civil servant, its service superior was its last Dienstvorgesetzer, if the highest service authority or with their absence (e.g. if it were dissolved), the Minister of the Interior, no different one had determined.
The official received still three further months its official salary after entrance into the stand-by.
The stand-by ended with the transmission of a new office or with the completion of the official relationship.
The officials in the stand-by were entitled their office designation with the additive "in the stand-by (i.W.)" and/or for the 1930er years with the additive "to the service use (z. To lead D.)".

The stand-by is in for instance with the provisional retirement comparable and and/or in some Lands of the Federal Republic also after the abolition of the German official law still as such is designated. Also in the church service instead of provisional retirement occasionally stand-by is used.
