STAMPIT is the franking software of the German post office. With this a franking note assistance of a Windows PC can be produced. The franking note consists thereby of a DATA matrix code (2-D-Strichcode). This contains data to the product, to the postage account, to the receiver address and a clear number. This is used for the prevention by copies of a franking note.

The system consists of pos day POINT, which administers the postage accounts, from a STAMPIT server, which serves the application interfaces and from the STAMPIT Clients, which are installed at the customers. The interfaces of the system are to be referred after signature of a Non Disclosure Agreements at the German post office. An implementation as free software is obstructed thereby.

At present the DP offers three different versions:

• STAMPIT WEB
• STAMPIT HOME for the private user
• STAMPIT BUSINESS for business and/or big customers

Postage is bought on-line and the stamps afterwards by means of the own printer is manufactured, information is converted to the transmission like the address and the height of paid postage into a machine-readable bar code. This technology was developed together by the German company GFT Technologies and the US-American software producer Adobe. Individual organization possibilities do not exist.

STAMPIT WEB was developed in co-operation with Adobe of system and integrated in a first basic function into the auction platform eBay. Later the post office developed however the additional offers "Stampit Home" and "Stampit Business", with whose assistance stamps can be made among other things also directly from applications such as Word. Some time came later "Stampit Web" on the market, with this product all procedures is Internet-supported accomplished.

For use software, the Adobe reader, and a defined Webbrowser is necessary. After the test with eBay it is now also possible to frank normal transmissions with STAMPIT WEB however only on use of the Internet Explorers.

Critics criticized frequently the high dependence of the users on the offers of the post office, in particular by only the petty cash attainable with an Internet entrance. "Stampit Web" can besides so far only by the Internetbrowser "Internet Explorer" of the company Microsoft is used. Individual users deplored themselves also over unexplainable of crashes of the software on older computers.
