Staff captain was in 18. Century (temporary) a rank and/or a utility position between Prime Minister second lieutenant (late first lieutenant) and captain/ride master. It represented the actual captain and company commander frequently in its absence.

That could be however also durable, if this usually noble captain had e.g. no "interest" at the company guidance - however for prestige and status reasons on the rank "captain" and carried for the uniform in the context of the company economy was dependent.

The old rank "staff captain" does not have anything comparable with the today's rank "staff captain", which lies between captain and major.
