A Stadtphysicus was in the early modern times of the advice of the city of employees physician and the predecessor of today's public health authorities.

The Stadtphysicus was responsible for sovereign measures, which concerned the health prevention of the population and the hygenic conditions in the city. To its tasks also the monitoring of persons, who were concerned with medical tasks, belonged so among other things to midwives and Bader.

Besides it had the task of the court medicine to inspect and accomplish with unclear cases autopsies the dead ones.
