Sozopol (Bulgarian , gr. Sosopolis) is a city at the Bulgarian black sea coast in the province Burgas. In September 2004 it has 4692 Einwohner.Die old part of town is because of the edge of the bay of Burgas on a rocky peninsula and is coined/shaped by close lanes and the characteristic black sea houses from that 19. Century. Before the peninsula 3 small islands lie. One of them is connected by a dam with the mainland and accommodates a base of the Bulgarian navy. The other two are uninhabited, up to a lighthouse. On the mainland the new city Sozopols lies, in which lately many accommodations for tourists were built. Between the two parts is a land bridge with a park plant. On the western side (to the bay) of the land bridge a small fishing port is, on eastern (to the open sea) one of the beaches Sozopols.
In 7. Century v. Chr. Greek sailors from Milet at the black sea coast in the place of the today's Sosopol, already settled by Thrakern, created a settlement, which they called after the God Apollon Apollonia Pontika. By its favorable situation for the navigation and fishery the city experienced an economic upswing, which was made visible by a large Apoll statue for driving past ships far away. When the city turned out under Roman rule, its influence decreased/went back. In the year 431 the city dips for the first time with the name Sozopol (griech. for city of the rescue) in documents up. Under osmanischer rule Sosopol did not have a supraregional meaning more. In 19. Century developed the today's land development. Due to the pictorial situation artists settled here, which brought in the surname city of the painters and Fischer for the city. After that 2. World war developed Sozopol to a popular resort of the Bulgaren and the inhabitants of other Eastern Bloc countries. In the proximity Sozopols in Primorsko, at the river Ropotamo, was also the private-hunting ground of the head of state Todor Schiwkow. Since the end of the communist rule the tourism in Sozopol and surrounding countryside increases strongly.
Newer excavations of the Nekropole of Appolonia Pontica have important finds from Thraki time 8. and 7. Century v. Chr. to day promoted. They were rich at Greek black and rotfiguriger ceramic(s), which testifies an early influence of the Greeks.
