Sort manufacturing is the production of different developments (sorts) of a same product as well as raw material, which are produced successively in so-called lot sizes. An example is the manufacturing of garden dwarves in different colors and sizes, whereby the raw material remains equal clay/tone. Traditional industrial companies with sort manufacturing are breweries, cheese factories, paper works or roller works. Sort products often mentioned are also screws, candles, beers, Fruchtjoghurte and others.
The sort manufacturing is a special case of the mass production and exhibits large similarities with the quantity production. For this reason it is called also frequently differentiated mass production. The English term for the sort manufacturing reads continuous batches production.
Contrary to the mass production the number of the produced units is limited during the sort manufacturing, since regularly a conversion to the production of another sort takes place. While during the quantity production technical differences between the individual products exist, during the sort manufacturing different sorts on the same production plants are manufactured.
Special forms of the sort manufacturing are the portion manufacturing and the batch production.
The sort goods can be produced either parallel in different or but successively on the same switch-selectable working system in lots. Before the sort change the production plant must be usually reequipped on the new sort. In some cases the conversion can take place also during the current production process, whereby it can come to committee products.
The critical point during the sort manufacturing is the planning of the size of order as well as the definition of the sort sequence. It is therefore very important, the series at optimal costs to find loose and/or production order size.
