History

Ericsson is active as armament and telecommunications company and was at the beginning of the 1990er years of one of the largest manufacturers of mobile telephones. But the section of mobile telephones showed weaknesses in the new millenium increasingly. As reasons for the bad business marketing and delivery problems as well as a slow-acting management were called.

The technical level of the Eric on devices was always very high, but the sharp-edged Design prevented commercial success outside of the Businesskundenbereiches and pushed the enterprise to the edge of the market. Last Ericsson had to subsidize each of its mobile telephones with scarcely 60 euro, which led to high losses and nearly to the bankruptcy.

Ericsson and Sony corporation publication on 24 April 2001 a memorandum OF Understanding to have signed. A goal was it to create a common enterprise in which world-wide the mobile telephone divisions of both enterprises are united. The new enterprise with the name "Sony Ericsson mobile Communications "should profit from of Ericsson authority within the range of telecommunications and from of Sony experiences within the range of the entertainment electronics. The existing lines under the label names of Ericsson and Sony were maintained, until the new mark could present own products.

On 28 August 2001 Ericsson and Sony agreed to unite their mobile telephone divisions and signed an appropriate agreement, which took part both enterprises in equal parts in Sony Ericsson. Sony placed in the course of the negotiations the condition that Sony Ericsson had to bring in at the latest starting from at the end of 2004 profit, otherwise one the joint undertaking would step out - this condition could be fulfilled in the fourth quarter 2003, when Sony Ericsson could show the first time a positive balance. On 11 September 2001 the joint venture was approved officially by the managements by Ericsson and Sony.

On 1 October 2001 the joint undertaking Sony Ericsson mobile Communications took up its business activity after the distribution of appropriate permission by competition authorities. The goal according to press release was it, "in the next five years the number one for mobile Multimediaprodukte [too] becomes ". At the same time also the new Logo of the mark was presented "Sony Ericsson ".
