Of soil compaction one speaks, if it comes by applying from load to a deformation and thus to a change of the three-phase system of soil.

With relatively small load a reversible (flexible) deformation adjusts itself, which springs back after terminating the load again into the starting situation. If it comes to a load over the point of the preloading, then a plastic deformation those shows up not reversibly and thus not completely into the starting situation springs back. Thus it comes particularly with the exceeding of the preloading to a shearing of the soil particles against each other and an a regulation of these with an increase of the firm phase with simultaneous acceptance of the liquid and gaseous phase.

Problems of the soil compaction result particularly in the agriculture, as also in forestry, where particularly negative aspects show up. Acceptance of the air conductivity, water conductivity, as well as increases of the preloading, the shear parameters, compaction can be proven.

It gives suitable measures around these compressions to work against, like the use of Terrareifen, direct seed or mechanical loosening measures, but a regeneration of soil damage finds under natural conditions, if at all, only very slowly instead of.

The problem of the soil compaction is for some decades a point at issue in the science.
