Sinop (griech. /), port and bathing resort at the black sea, is the capital of the Turkish province of the same name Sinop in the north Anatoliens. The city has about 26,000 inhabitants, in the summer months however up to 60.000. Sinop is on the transition to the mainland pre-aged a peninsula and is because of the narrowest place only approximately 200 m broad.

History

Sinop took an important role over several thousands of years as culture and commercial centre at the black sea. The oldest traces of human settlement originate from the Bronzezeit.

Sinop was the first black sea colony of the Greek city Milet which was located at the west coast of small Asia; the oldest certifications of Greek settlement originate from that 7. Century v. Chr.). Sinop had in 5. Century v. Chr. the military Vormacht in the black sea and so e.g. created many own colonies along the black sea coast, Amisos (the today's Samsun), Cerausos (Giresun), and Trapezous (Trabzon), which brought it to great importance.

183 v. Chr. conquered Pharnakes Ith Sinop and made it the capital of the Kingdom of Pontos. After the defeat of the pontischen king Mithridates VITH 64 v. Chr. against the Roman field gentleman Pompeius Magnus incorporated the Romans Pontos into her realm and the influence Sinops decreased. Julius Caesar created 46 v. Chr in the year. a colony in Sinop.

After the Seldschuken had taken the city in the year 1214, the city meaning won and belonged since 1458 to the Osmani realm.

After the destroying sea-battle of Lepanto in the year 1571 the osmanische Sultan Selim Ith let build in Sinop several hundred ships for the fleet of the realm. But workers from the entire Osmani realm were brought after Sinop, from which many settled in the region. They contributed, like also Greeks, Tscherkessen, Georgier, Bulgaren and Turks to cultural variety.

On 20 November 1853, briefly after outbreak of the Krimkrieges, large parts of the city burned after an unexpected attack of the Russian war navy, down.
