Sergeant (English) or Sergent (franz., both of lat. serviens, serving) is in English and states the military rank of an NCO.

In Great Britain the rank Sergeant with its powers covers the German Federal Armed Forces ranks "NCO" to including "technical sergeants" off (see NATO-climb code system).

In Swiss army the "Sergeant" corresponds to the "Wachtmeister", who is used as a group leader.

To Prussia the rank of the Sergeanten was again introduced 1843, after it had been in the meantime abolished and used partly synonymously with the term sergeant. In the armies of the German empire the Sergeant ranked after the Portepee NCOs and was located between the "Corporal" and/or NCO and the vice-sergeant. Equal the NCO the Sergeant managed a squad. The rank was renamed 1921 in "SSGs".
