Semperit AG, enterprise of the rubber industry and formerly important tire manufacturer, exist one of the largest enterprises of Austria since 1912 and were in the fifties of the last century.
On initiative of the Viennese of bank association it comes in the years of 1910 - 1912 to a fusion of several enterprises of the Austria-Hungarian india rubber industry, from which the Semperit Austria American rubber works corporation develops. The forerunners were the Gummiwarenfabrik Miskolczy created by the Hungary Josef Miskolczy (1858 - 1921) 1898 with Traiskirchen, which was renamed around 1906 in Semperit of rubber works GmbH. The name Semperit - a Miskolczys - meant on latin in approximately "always functions". Also the 1861 in Vienna created company Schneck & Kohnberger, who is converted 1889 into a corporation with the name Austrian American rubber factories AG, as well as their subsidiary companies, the Hungarian Gummiwarenfabrik AG come up in the Semperit AG. The Austrian American rubber factories AG manufactured the Continental Pneumatics tire with approx. 1000 workers 1897 in co-operation with the Continental Caoutchuc and Gutta Percha Companie, Hanover in Vienna above all. The Semperit AG was thereby before the First World War the largest rubber production in the area of the habsburger monarchy.
Semperit with difficulties, after the war gets over the First World War continues to expand Semperit. In the economic crisis 1923 the united rubber goods Harburg is forced factories - Vienna to sell their rubber factory in Wimpassing to the Semperit AG. This 1824 of Johann Nepomuk Reithoffer (1781 -1872) created rubber factory were the oldest of Europe. Also its half brother Johann Reithoffer (1796-1858) had created, after he had been director/conductor of the rubber factory before in Vienna, 1832 its own rubber factory. This enterprise, which was renamed after the death of its founder in rubber and cable works Josef Reithoffer's of sons, successfully manufactured tires. 1925 had to fuse also the rubber and the cable works Josef Reithoffer's of sons with the Semperit AG.

After the connection of Austria to the German Reich the Semperit AG remained formally independent, however by a mutual auxiliary agreement bound to the Continental AG from Hanover, from there received it to knowledge and machines. With beginning of the Second World War the Semperit AG was changed over to wartime economy, then beside tires also tank tracks were produced. During the war strengthens Polish forced laborers begun to replace around workers and production upright zuhalten. The general manager at that time Messner was arrested at the end of of 1944 of the Gestapo, since he had belonged to a resistance cell, and in April 1945 in KZ duty living killed.
After the Red Army had dismantled the largest part of the machines, the resumption of production began under large difficulties in August 1945. In October 1945 410 coworkers were busy at the Semperit AG. 1951 was repaired the damage of the war, until 1972 could expand the Semperit AG strongly. End of 1972 employed the Semperit AG over 15.000 coworkers and was the second largest enterprise of Austria.
Majority shareholder of the Semperit AG was since end of the war the state-own Creditanstalt, which functioned at the same time also as house bank. This majority shareholder provided also for the fall of the Semperit AG, since this provided for a continuing Unterfinanzierung. The Creditanstalt permitted no capital increase, but assigned credits, with the consequence that the Semperit AG itself increasingly are to blame for. While growth phases was not that a problem, in crisis periods could the commitments are not however any longer paid.
1973 came it in the course of the first oil crisis to sales resistance on the tire market and to large losses at the Semperit AG. Thereupon a co-operation with a Michelin subsidiary is agreed upon and the Semkler AG is created. But hopes do not fulfill themselves and co-operation to 1979 are again dissolved. The Semperit AG makes further debts, until the Austrian state substitutes and a capital increase made possible. With it the enterprise for a sales should be strengthened. 1983 are created getting thing and the Semperit is split up an AG into several partial companies, which are then sold gradually.
The tire section is 1983 as Semperit tire Ges.b.H and sold perfectly 1985, when it gains again profit, of the Creditanstalt, to the competitor, the Continental AG Hanover, provides with an inventory warranty for the next 10 years. In the following years the staff was systematically diminished. 2002 were adjusted tire production and the last former Semperit work in Austria in Traiskirchen was closed, while the two subsidiaries, which Semperit with brought into Tschechien and Slovenia with Continental the production plants took over under the name Semperit continue to produce. Continental still holds the trademark laws at the name "Semperit".
About 6,200 coworkers, of it approximately 1,000 in Austria, are at present at the Semperit AG getting thing in the following subsidiaries: Sempermed, Semperflex, Semperform and Sempertrans, employ. In Austria is company headquarters in Vienna, which is manufacturing plant in Wimpassing in Lower Austria the parent plant, which was built 1850 by Johann Nepomuk Reihoffer, which shifted the production of its 1824 in Vienna created india rubber factory after Wimpassing. In Thailand the world-wide largest production for investigation gloves belongs to the company. Scarcely over 50% of the shares the B&C getting thing GmbH, getting thing, holds which administers the participation of the bank Austria Creditanstalt AG. The conversion amounted to 2005 515 million euro.
