In sectors of the economy in the economic science industry and trades are divided. They find their basis in the three-sector hypothesis of the political economy.

Primary sector

To these sectors belong agriculture, forestry, fishery as well as the mining industry.

Secondary sector

The secondary sector does not cover the producing trade of a national economy, i.e. processing of raw materials, processing trade, industry, handicraft, energy industry, power supply and water supply however construction industries. Synonymously the term of the industriellen of sector is used. In addition, mining industry.

Of the sector the subsequent treatment of goods from the primary sector is characteristic, whereby it is material intensive. By the production process by means of use of capital goods it is capital-intensive.

Tertiary sector

The tertiary sector or also service sector covers all enterprises of a national economy, which services furnish. Belong to it under other following industries:

  • Tourism, hotel and catering trade

  • Credit institutes
  • Insurance
  • Flat-letting business
  • other enterprises or free occupations, which furnish services
  • Organizations without an acquisition character
  • Regional administrative bodies
  • Social security
  • Banks
  • private households
  • public households, e.g. State of, municipalities, German Federal Armed Forces etc.

Of the sector production is characteristic by employment of work, thus the sector is personnel intensive.

Due to the economicalally meaning activity certain branches of the tertiary sector are specified often separately. This usually concerns the ranges trade, traffic and public households. Meaningful this subdivision is in particular for service-intensive locations: Cities such as Frankfurt/Main, Bonn, London or Paris gain around the 90% of their gross value creation within the service range.

There are different definitions for the quart eras sector.
