Secondary energy is the form of energy remaining after the transformation of the primary energy carriers in so-called utilizable sources of energy.

Source of energy

  • Electric current
  • Fuel oil, gasoline, diesel oil, briquette, liquid gas, natural gas
  • Long-distance heating
  • Process gases (chemical industry)

Characteristics

Secondary energy is usually characterised by one of the following characteristics,

  • good shelf-life (e.g. Coke, refined oils)
  • good transportability (e.g. Electricity)
  • high power density (e.g. Coke)
  • simple/approves of production (briquette)

One of these characteristics under normal conditions preferred, dependent on place and are intended purpose often the by-products of the production of secondary energy just as usable secondary energy (e.g. gas during the gasoline production or warmth is with the production of electricity a by-product, which can be further-used as process gas or long-distance heating).
