The term second world was named in former times, in the time of the cold war the Eastern Bloc in such a way specified, thus the socialist countries, which were allied with the Soviet Union.

Today the term is often used instead of its for the developing countries in such a way specified, thus for a group of countries, which are about to leave the status of a developing country and become the industrialized country. The meaning of the term decreased/went back however since 1989 strongly, also the before times spread and not undisputed names third world (for developing countries) and fourth world (usually for developing countries lacking in raw materials or in such a way specified Developed Countries leases) are since then less and less used.
