Scipione Riva Rocci (* 7 August 1863 in Almese with Turin; "† 15. March 1937 in Turin) was an Italian physician.
Riva Rocci developed starting from 1890 in Turin "a Sphygmomanometer "with mercury (of Greek sphygmos = pulse and "manometers ": Greek manos = wacklig; Greek metron = measure), a forerunner of today's blood pressure apparatuses.
1901 discovered Harvey Williams Cushing this procedure on an Italy journey, improved the equipment for clinical application and popularized it.
Its procedure was improved around 1905 by the Russian army surgeon Nikolai Sergejewitsch Korotkow by employment of the Stethoskops for hearing the late Korotkow noises designated after it. Thus also the diastolic pressure could be measured.
Until today the arterial blood pressure indicated as seal at the upper arm, mercury column and keys of the pulse "after Riva Rocci "frequently in millimeter mercury (mmHg) instead of the SI-UNIT Pascal. Sometimes in such a way measured blood pressure is shortened still with RR.
