Scientific auxiliary workers at German universities studying or persons employed with university conclusion is called, which supporting activities in teachings, research and service to perform. Often they are called briefly HiWis. A further designation is Famulant (of lat. famulus: Servant, farmhand).
There are so-called examined scientific auxiliary workers (with university conclusion) and student or unchecked wissenschaftiche auxiliary workers (without university conclusion).
Student auxiliary workers are usually students, who work for a professor or a lecturer. The activities are enough from "tasks of secretariat "like a making of copies and picking of different books out from the library concerning the independent line of Tutorien and exercises up to the support or cooperation with research projects.

The remuneration corresponded to the hourly wages at that time of the VIII/IX (converted 8.06 "€) of the federal employee wage agreement. Some Lands of the Federal Republic lowered the tariff in the meantime (Baden-Wuerttemberg 7.50 "€, (Bavaria 6.20 "€). In Berlin the conditions of work are regulated since 1979 in a collective agreement for student person employed (TV Stud II), who of the trade unions ver.di (before times public workers' union) and GEW is closed. Altogether the duration, for which a student may work as an auxiliary worker, is limited Germany to four years. In February 2002 in Steinbach with Frankfurt/Main the collective agreement initiative of student persons employed was based, who demand a as fixed in the tariff and personnel-legal security of all student persons employed at scientific mechanisms.
