Science and progress was a scientific monthly magazine of the GDR with contributions from all science ranges. It was published by the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and printed by the academy publishing house Berlin.

It contained several mostly short essays and article, 20 to 30 sides of it, about a side book reviews more scientifically and of also popular-scientific literature, two to three sides with current short messages from the science, as well as additionally in each case a side with nontrivial tasks of mathematics and solutions.

1989 expressed themselves the authors of the newspaper critically for the national promotion of the key technologies in the GDR. Their opinion is a special promotion of these only possible and meaningfully, "if it on a reasonable, proportional development of all branches of national economy based".

In the area of the GDR this magazine under the names "SCIENCE AND PROGRESS" was driven out, called also briefly "WiFo". Freely to abbonnieren approx. starting from 01/1975 (25.Jahrgang).

The first booklet appeared in May 1951. The monthly booklets were combined into classes.

The expenditures to number 12/1990 called themselves "SCIENCE AND PROGRESS". Under same name the expenditures appeared again starting from 02/1991 - 12/1991.

The numbers 01/1992 to number 08/1992 now called themselves "SCIENCE AND PROGRESS MAGAZINE FOR THINKING".

Afterwards there were the two expenditures number 09/1992 and number 01/1993 under the name "WIFO JOURNAL KNOWLEDGE & RESEARCHING INTERDISCIPLINARY". The expenditures should appear only quarter year old.

Usually the magazines were abbonniert by educational facilities (also abroad). Certain persons (vocationally caused) could refer the magazine already regularly before 1973. For freely available expenditures, quasi for "everyone" was only possible starting from one period of approx. 1973-1975 (depended locally on the selling of the post office). Occasionally one could purchase individual expenditures at the news stand, these was however very fast out of print. The magazine did not attain large spreading and complete collections in private households is rather rare.
