Sassoon (of Sason = " joy ") is the name of a famous Jewish buyer family

History

The Sassoons can lead back their origins as "ibn Schoschon" in the maurische Spain of the late Middle Ages. After in consequence of the Reconquista the Jewish population was exposed to increasing repression by the catholic ruling powers, they fled in 16. Century to Bagdad.

There the family lived well 200 years to a large extent undisturbed, before it at the beginning 19. Century under osmanischer rule to Pogromen came also there. 1833 fled David Sassoon with its family first to Persia, shortly thereafter finally after Bombay. There David created the trading firm David Sassoon & CO., whose owner ascended soon to a successful and outstanding buyer family. A name they made themselves in addition, by philanthropische works like the building of synagogs, schools and social mechanisms.

After the opening of China for the foreign trade by the contract of Nanking 1842 the family became also there active and brought it, not least by Opiumhandel, to large wealth.

Considerably at the ascent both oldest sons Albert Abdullah and Elias were involved in particular beside David its. First continued the inheritance of its father particularly in India, moved into the 1870er years to England and crowned its social ascent finally 1887 with the wedding of his son Edward Anthony with the Baroness Aline Caroline from the house Rothschild. Elias meanwhile became the master father of the Chinese branch of the family Sassoon. Today descendants of the dynasty live particularly in England and the USA.
