Salt caravans are the last today still usual camel caravans.
In west Africa Tuareg with Dromedaren pull to the oases with salt production, in order to carry the oasis products Datteln and salt, which find usually as cattle lick use, in the exchange against millet to the south. The salt is exchanged into the pasture areas in the Niger and in Nigeria again against millet, corn or rice.
The salt caravans are predominantly accomplished by Tuareg, which are settled in the Niger in the mountains, for example in Timia, El Meki or Iferouane. They take place usually during the winter months from October to January. Unfortunately the salt caravans are partly displaced by LKWs, so that the Tuareg loses the vitally necessary income from the caravan trade. In the past there were already caravans, in which up to 25.000 Dromedare participated. Usual caravans consist of 50 to 300 animals. In each case sieve to eight animals by a man are cared for.
