Safety stair space is a term from the preventing fire protection. A stair space is named, with which by structural or technical measures the penetration of fire and smoke in the case of fire is to be prevented.

In the simplest case the goal is achieved by the fact that the entrances to the stair space lead across an open balcony is then designated (frequently as "fire balcony"). In the case of fire the smoke pulls off when opening the appropriate doors not into the stair space but over the balcony (the penetration of small smoke quantities is tolerated thereby). Occasionally also from the building more set off and over bridges an attainable stair space is built.

A technical measure for the smokeless attitude of the stair space can e.g. be the entrance over a forced-draught Sicherheitsschleuse.

There technical measures both with the building and in the maintenance (maintenance and examination of the plants) are usually clearly more expensive as the structural measures described above, them only in exceptional cases are selected.

Apart from the smokeless attitude against a safety stair space further demands are made. Thus it may to be built e.g. only from non-combustible building materials and the walls have in the kind by fire walls to be implemented. Also no lines (river, water, waste water, gas etc.) may be shifted in it, with exception for the supply of the stair space necessary (e.g. Stromleitungen for the lighting).
