The airplane Saab 340 represents the entrance of the company Saab into civilian aviation. It applied to develop an airplane which should be settled in the segment of the regional airplanes, but should the competition in the speed and in the comfort to be superior. On the basis of the available turbo-propane impulses one developed an airplane, which was similar from its extents the today usual regional jets with jet engines.
While one could leave with the development of the airplane on strong partners (one by the development of the bearing areas from the assistance of NASA and the whole project profited in such a way by Fairchild were carried), had one after the development on itself relies, because the fastened company Fairchild withdrew itself from the business.
The Saab 340 is a low-wing aircraft, which looks from the outside appearance like a modern medium-haul aircraft. Instead of the jet engines the airplane possesses of propeller engines.
From the Saab 340 a stretched version, which develops Saab 2000, became later.
