Ruth Handler (* 4 November 1916 in Denver, Colorado, the USA; "† 27 April 2002) was common with its man Elliot Handler and Harold Matson the foundress of the American play goods company Mattel and is considered as actual "Erfinderin" to the Barbie doll.

Ruth Handler was born 1916 as a youngest daughter of the Polish-Jewish immigrants Jakob Joseph Mosko and IDA Rubenstein in Denver (Colorado). 1938 married it Elliot Handler, which created 1945 together with Matson a small company, in order to manufacture Bilderrahmen and doll's house furniture. Since doll furniture sold itself well, one specialized in the production of various play goods.

On a European journey Ruth Handler in Switzerland in a shop window discovered a German mannequin doll named Lilli, which bought her for its daughter Barbara. This doll became the model for the Barbie doll, which sold Mattel starting from 1959. The Unternehmerin explained later, they considered it important for the development of the female self value feeling that girls with dolls play, which have a bosom. Critics criticized however that the proportions of Barbie - large bosom, extremely narrow waist, long legs - to rather male desire conceptions correspond and it therefore as toy was unsuitable. Barbie was a best seller however from the outset and justified the success of Mattel. It is today annually world-wide millionfold sold until.

1967 became Ruth Handler the president of the enterprise. In the 70's it got sick with cancer of the breast and withdrew themselves from the guidance floor Mattels. It died 2002 at the age of 85 years and at the Hillside Memorial park cemetery in Culver town center (California) was buried.
