Rudolf Schirmer (* 10. March 1831 in grab forest, "† 27 January 1896), was a German optician, professor at the University of grab forest as well as founder and first director/conductor of the there university ophthalmic clinic.

Rudolf Schirmer was the son Greifswalder Konsistorialrats professor A. Schirmer. It visited the High School in grab forest, changed to the High School in Schulpforta and took there its maturity examination. Subsequently, it studied medicine in Goettingen, grab forest, Vienna, Paris and Berlin. He was a pupil of Albrecht of Graefe (1828-1870). After its graduation habilitierte itself it 1860 in Berlin. Subsequently, it justified eye-medical instruction at the University of grab forest. After it up and had developed since 1871 gradually the regular supply of eye patients in the surgical hospital, under its line 1887 the newly built ophthalmic clinic was opened, which it led until 1893.

Because of its increasing myopiebedingter Sehminderung 1893 its son Otto Schirmer changed the chair for Ophthalmologie at the University of grab forest to the ophthalmic clinic grab forest and took over 1896.

1896 deceased to Rudolf Schirmer at Influenza pneumonia.

The establishment of the eye medicine as independent subject, work over refraction and anomalies of accommodation as well as over illnesses the tear apparatus rank among its most important achievements.
