Sir Rowland Hill (* 3 October 1795 in Kidderminster; "Â 27 August 1879 in Hampstead) was a Reformator of the English postal service.
Rowland Hill was born as a nephew of the general Rowland Hill. It was to 1833 teachers, became then a secretary of the Society for the diffusion OF useful knowledge and excited large attention by its writing post office office reform, lts importance and practicability (Lond. 1837), in whatever it demanded a profound reform of the English postal service, in particular a uniform Portosatz of 1 penny for letters up to the weight of 0.5 ounce within the country. This demand was raised 1840 to the law, and Hill stepped into the service of the post office.
It became 1846 secretary of the general post office master, 1854 directing secretary of the Postdepartemens, stepped 1864 into the retirement and died on 27 August 1879 in Hampstead with London.
In acknowledgment of its earnings/services Hill received a national reward from 20.000 Pound of Sterling, in the Westminsterabtei was buried, and 1881 were revealed there its 1882 another monument in relation to the stock exchange.
After Chalmers (The penny pos-meet scheme OF 1837: which it on inventlon or A CoPy, Lond. 1879) were not Hill, but lord Lowther of the inventors of penny postage.
