Rita Levi Montalcini (* 22 April 1909 in Turin, Italy) is an Italian-American Neurobiologin. It was distinguished 1986 together with Stanley Cohen with the Nobelpreis for medicine and physiology.

It led among other things from 1969 to 1979 in Rome the laboratory for cell biology of the national research advice. Their research work concentrated on cellular transmission of news and the control mechanisms of the cell and fabric growth. She discovered the Epidermal Growth Factor and a Polypeptid, which work as nerve growth factor. For the isolation and Charaktierisierung of this nerve growth factor it was distinguished with the Nobelpreis.

It is member of the Accademia national ones dei Lincei, Rome and that internationally Academy OF Science.Ausserdem is it since August 2001 member on lifetime in the Italian senate, appointed by the president.

2006 should lead it the kostituierende meeting of the parliament as a age president. She did to favour of OSCAR Luigi Scalfaro without this honour.

Its twin sister Paola (1909-2000) was a successful artist.
