The company Bonnet was a small French manufacturer of sports cars.
Since beginning of the 50's Bonnet as well as its partner Charles German with sports cars a name had made itself the railways (German Bonnet). These cars of a capacity-weak Panhard engine (2-Zyl were propelled. - Boxer, 850 ccm). Partially these cars in series manufactured (e.g. railways Coach standard/Luxe/super Rallye), others remained only unique pieces. In the year 1961 it came however to discrepancies between Bonnet and German. German left the company and Bonnet resumed the company under the name Bonnet.
Bonnet began now with the planning of a new Protoypen, which was equipped with Renault technology. This prototype was used 1962 into Le Mans and one of it abgeleitetet road version of the Djet was likewise developed. This sports car had a characteristic: Mittelmotor.Ausserdem a tubing framework chassis for a 3 car was built for formula. Co-operation with Renault was developed. The body consisted of fiber glass and the small company could not master the many development and production programmes no more in the own house. Bonnet delivered the production of the body equipment at GAP (generals D `Application Plastiques) in Romorantin (approx. 200 km south of Paris). This Deal made possible by Marcel Chassagny, president and general manager von Matra.
After Bonnet at the beginning of of 1964 came into financial problems, its company was taken over by GAP (a 100%ige daughter of Matra). First one gave the name Societe Matra Bonnet to the new company, but starting from October the new enterprise formed Matra sport only under S.A.
