Reggio di Calabria or Reggio Calabria is a city at the south point of the Italian peninsula and capital of the province Reggio Calabria.

Situation and data

It was the capital of the region Kalabrien, until it had this function 1970 at Catanzaro transfer (the regional parliament has however still its seat in Reggio di Calabria). The city lies opposite from Messina (Sicily) and has 183,791 inhabitants (conditions to 31. May 2005).

The neighbour municipalities are: Bagaladi, Calanna, Campo Calabro, Cardeto, Fiumara, Laganadi, Montebello Ionico, Motta San Giovanni, Roccaforte del Greco, Sant'Alessio in Aspromonte, Santo Stefano in Aspromonte and mansion San Giovanni.

History

Griech. City Rhegion (Latin Rhegium', Regium') at the Fretum Siculum, the oldest Greek colony is in Italy, became of settlers from Chalkis in 8 beside Cumae. Century v. Chr. (720) based and later also of Messeniern settled, it prospered by trade soon to such bloom that she placed at present the Dionysios 70 warships. 433 v. Chr. if Regium closed a contract with the Athenern, and allied themselves 427 with these against Syrakus, 415 remained however neutral. Conquered by Dionysios (the Tyrannen) after large fights and FE storages of several years 387, and destroys, with the scatter its inhabitant as slaves, did not rise her not again to their old prosperity.

Them were several times into wars with Lokroi complicated, to them briefly before the first Puni war 264 v. Chr. as allied city (civitas foederata) under Roman rule came. After the confederate war, which brought the Roman citizen right to the inhabitants, Regium became a Municipium, and developed under the name Rhegium Julii to a magnificent Roman city. It became later a Byzantine city, in the 12ten century became it a part of the kingdom of Sicilies and in the 13ten century of the Kingdom of Neapel.

From Rhegion originated from Schillers Ballade well-known poets Ibykos.

As quite often in the antiquity Reggio in such a way became on 28 December 1908 by an earthquake of Messina 1908, which was connected with a Tsunami, devastates.

Reggio Calabria is well-known as the place first dated Hebrew book, one 1475 from the Pentateuch of printed Raschi comment.

• Museo Nazionale Archeologico Di Magna Grecia with the famous Greek bronze statues from the time of 460 to 430 v.Chr., which nearby the place Riace Marina in Kalabrien were found to 1972 on the reason of the Ioni sea.
