Of a reference model one speaks, if it is a general model for a class of circumstances, which has the following characteristics:
- On basis of the general model special models (when basis for the construction of completely certain circumstances) can be planned.
- The general model can be consulted as comparison object, i.e. it makes comparisons possible with other models, which describe the same circumstances.
The reference model represents thus a model sample, which can be regarded as ideal-typical model for the class of circumstances which can be modelled.
There are reference models for example for
- Hospital information systems
- DATA Warehouse systems
- Network minutes; here in particular OSI model, TCP/IP reference model
