Raytheon company is an American armament and electronics company with seat in Waltham, mA. To two former room mates at the college Laurence K. Mars-resound and Vannevar Bush (not related to the US presidents George and George W. Bush), created 1922 together with the scientist Charles G. Smith, the today's Raytheon company than American Appliance company in Cambridge, mA. First commercial success was a gas-filled electric rectifier, which made it possible to operate radios with alternating current from the plug socket in place of at that time expensive and heavy batteries. It was sold under the label name Raytheon, builds themselves out "ray" English up for "jet" and "theon" griech. for "of the Gods". Because of a name controversy the name of the enterprise was changed 1925 in Raytheon.

The enterprise fused 1997 with Hughes aircraft, designated after its founder Howard Hughes. The company manufactures today in its various ranges and subsidiary companies a broad pallet of products. Above all military equipment with complex control e.g. the air defense system Patriot and other rockets, torpedo and cruise missile. In addition Raytheon of wheel acres for nearly each combat aircraft of US air Force manufactures, among them also progressive Active Electronically Scanned array.
