The police in Austria consists of different awake bodies, from which the largest settles, in completely Austria usual tasks of police, which are federal police. This has approximately 1000 police inspections and about 20,000 coworkers. It is subordinated to the Federal Ministry for inside. By 1 July 2005 the Austrian national territory was divided still on two awake bodies. Beside the federal police was i.e. in the largest part of Austria, in all municipalities without municipal law, which Bundesgendarmerie responsibly, which brought also 15,000 officials to these after pool with the police too.

History

The first safety organization with tasks of police in Austria was the Bundesgendarmerie, which was created 1849. 1869 were created the federal safety guard corps.

Powers, rights and obligations of the security authorities are regulated in the state police law.

Awake body

Municipality and city police

Beside the federal police, which is responsible in completely Austria, still 21 city police, which is subordinated to the cities, exists and only limited executive power has.

Flight police

Likewise not part of the federal police is the flight police, which operates Austria far eight bases.

Law guard

The law guard is subordinated to the Federal Ministry for law, which are active in penal establishments and with prisoner transportation.

Several special units, which are likewise subordinated to the ministry of the Interior, can be consulted for special tasks:
