A play developer (English game more developer) is a person or a company, who concerns themselves with the development of computer games. Well-known play developers are among other things aluminium Lowe, John Carmack, John Romero, Peter Molyneux, Gabe Newell and Ron Gilbert. Well-known play development companies are for example ID software, Blizzard Entertainment or Nintendo. Beside the professional play developers also a constantly growing scene of hobby developers exists.
Outstanding play developers appreciated in the AIAS resound to OF Fame.
German play development enterprises are organized since 2004 in the federation G.A.M.E. Since short time there are also teaching professions after guidelines industrie and of the Chamber of Commerce (IHK) to the "Game designer".
Persons, who sketch plays, which are not played on a computer, call one to play authors.
Fields of work
With the development of computer games a multiplicity of most different abilities is used. One differentiates between the among other things following important fields.
Producers worry about the financial interests and often supervise several projects. Usually they are as in the Filmbranche deputies of a Finanziers and exert with critical competition-relevant decisions even direct influence on the play Design. They control also a keeping of contract agreements (e.g. by regulation of milestones) and organize the play publication over the Publisher.Gamedesigner correspond earliest to the position, which directors in the film industry take. They determine play contents, the play feeling and coordinate the work of the coworkers. Usually also the largest attention comes to them in the media.
- Well-known Gamedesigner is for example Hideo Kojima, Peter Molyneux, Sid Meier, Roberta Williams, Warren Spector and Shigeru Miyamoto.
Programmers implement the computer game using particularly developed or bought Game Engines. C++ is usually used as programming language with computer games.
- Increasingly in projects on higher level also simpler script languages (e.g. Lua and Python) are used. This has the advantage that one can modifizeren the play mechanics without restart of the program and it can be controlled also by Nichtprogrammierern, whereby level designers or play designers can have direct influence on the play mechanics.
- Well-known programmers are for example John Carmack and Tim Sweeney.
Commercial artists worry about graphic contents, which are to be presented by the engine. In the today's 3D-Generation constitute the Modeller the largest part during a play coil. They create three-dimensional figures, which in the play by animation the roles of the play hero and the opponent takes by means of modelling programs. In addition they e.g. model all Einzelobjekte, which exhibit a higher detail degree, like the weapons or other articles of equipment. Modeller spezialsieren themselves thereby also certain aspects of its Design, like e.g. inventing new characters or the animation.
- Commercial artists have a large influence on the graphic quality and the atmosphere, however rather a small influence on the play mechanics. Dave Gibbons painted background the Adventure classical author Beneath A Steel Sky.
Level designers provide the level in such a way specified, thus the three-dimensional environments and architectures of the play world. Their work is limited not alone to the geometrical organization, but also to the lighting and sound window blind of the virtual environment. They are to be compared therefore earliest with architects and stage designers.
- With their work they use level editors. Level designers codesign the play mechanics directly by their work. Pretty often those do not only cover level landscapes or architectures, but also events or behavior of the opponents (Scripted so mentioned Events) pre-defined. For the definition of these data simple script languages are used (see above).
- A well-known level designer is Richard Gray.
Musicians compose the music. In the last years the music in computer games adapts thereby to the momentary play dynamics. Therefore usually certain tendencies are shown, which are over-dazzled dynamically, if the game situation changes (for example the hero is attacked on a beautiful and calm summer day surprisingly by a monster).
- The computer game musician Chris reached cult status already with his work into the early 1990er years. Today there are film musicians also recognized such as Harry Gregson Williams, which tone computer games. Admits is forwards also Michael country for the title music of Monkey Iceland. John Williams made the music for the Indiana of Jones films and - plays. Also in Japan video game musicians are very popular such as Nobuo Uematsu.
Sound designers arrange the sound window blind and all noises of characters, weapons or vehicles. In addition they serve of material models (e.g. with realistic Kriegsshootern and author plays) or designen themselves the noises independently (e.g. starting a spaceship, the sound expressions of a monster or opening a magic chest). Authors attained increasing meaning only in the last years. Background stories and realistic Charakterdartellungen are more importantly noticed only now as ever. The-correspond come increase professional writers, Storyschreiber and dialogue writer to the employment.
- A well-known writer, who supplied the background for several very successful play series, is Tom Clancy. Among other things also Marc Laidlaw, the writer, who helped Life for and Life 2 background history helped supplied, became known only by this as an author.
Beta testers test computer games. Since computer games like hardly another type of software within shortest time by an immense number by players one uses, a special meaning is attached to them. Besides the attitude is considered as beta tester as very good occupation of entrance into the computer game industry.
