The Petrochemie is actually the chemistry of the rocks, which term however increasingly used for the chemistry of the oil products, which is called actually "petrochemistry".

There of hydrocarbon connections (see organic chemistry) to essentially consist, the Petrochemie concerns itself oil and natural gas with the synthesis of hydrocarbon connections from components of the oil and natural gas. Most well-known examples are the production of fuels for vehicle engines and the production of all kinds of plastics.

Trailblazing work in the Petrochemie is in the first third 20. Century carried out (Fischer-Tropsch-Synthese). In the course of the using interest in bio fuels the Petrochemie, which was regarded so far in the special measure as "stinking" and "dirtily", experiences a revaluation (bio Diesel).

The Petrochemie forms the link between the oil industry and the chemical industry. It processes certain parliamentary groups of crude oil distillation into petrochemical raw products, which are converted by the chemical industry into a multiplicity of finished products. The Petrochemie takes thereby a fundamental position in organic chemistry (chemistry of carbon and its connections), and these again is today at least quantitatively regards the most important field of chemistry at all. The number of well-known organic (natural) compounds is larger around a repeated than those the inorganic (metallic).
