The British company Psion PLC. one of the prominent manufacturers of personnel was digital Assistants (PDAs) and ranks among the Miterfindern of this device class in the 90's.

History

The company Psion was created 1980 by university professor Sir David Potter (* in South Africa). The acronym stands for "Potter Scientific of instrument Or emergency-hung". Psion was concerned first with computer games for home computers like for example the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and the Office package for the Sinclair QL (to text processing pour, spread-sheet analysis Abacus, data base of archives, business diagram Easel), which was offered to PC-4 later under the name also in a version for MS-DOS and at that time an operability and a stability amazingly good for conditions possessed.

1984 appeared to I with the Organiser the first portable computer and/or PDA battery life of Psion, long with keyboard and. The later devices Series 3 (starting from 1991) and Series 5 (starting from 1997) set yardsticks regarding the reliability and user-friendliness. In particular the good usability of the keyboard in such a small equipment is worth mentioning. Psion nevertheless lost increasingly market shares opposite keyboardless PDAs (in particular of Palm, now PalmOne) and stopped production of PDAs as Consumer product in the year 2002.

For its PDAs Psion developed own operating systems named SIBO and EPOC. The advancement of the operating system EPOC32 was separated 1998 into the company Symbian, in whatever beside Psion Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia were involved. In the year 2004 Psion sold its portions of Symbian, which meanwhile market leader is with Smartphone operating systems.

After separating and the attitude of PDA production in the year 2002 the bought Canadian company Teklogix remains to the operating system section as only producing division. Under the name Psion Teklogix are manufactured PDAs with the operating system Windows CE and radio nets for industrielle applications.
