Predecessor/successor relationship designates technologically caused connections of processes within a process chain.

Under the logic of an article structure and/or by technologically caused working on steps for the manufacturing of a part (e.g. tricks - hardnesses - loops) certain processing steps can be implemented possibly only, after one or more other processing steps are completed. Predecessor/successor relations is result of the so-called sequence planning, in which such connections are recognized and/or determined.

Predecessor/successor relations is usually already defined with the plant of a production article (schedule). Conceivable also a required necessity is to the regulation or adjustments of predecessor/successor relations after the requirements of a concrete production process.
