Pratt & Whitney (short: P & W) is an American air and space undertaking with seat in hard Ford, Connecticut. It was created 1925 by Frederick Brant Rentschler, a flier in the First World War. Today it belongs to the United Technologies corporation (UTC).

History

Admits became the coworker Pratt 1923 by the discovery and introduction of lead-coated gasoline (lead against the knocking burn with piston motors. Starting from 1926 with Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines were built, beginning with a 9-Zylinder-Sternmotor.

Piston aircraft engines were produced in particular in the Second World War in large numbers of items for different airplane companies, so e.g.:

  • R-1340 "Wasp" (9-Zylinder-Sternmotor)
  • R-985 "Wasp junior" (9-Zylinder-Sternmotor)
  • R-1830 "twin Wasp" (14-Zylinder-Sternmotor, for B-24-Bomber), one of the usually-built piston engines at all: approx. 173,000 pieces.
  • R-1535 twin Wasp junior (14-Zylinder-Sternmotor)
  • R-2800 "double Wasp" (18-Zylinder-Sternmotor, for P-47-Jagdflugzeuge, 2,400 HP, 45,900 cm capacity)
  • R-4360 "Wasp major" (28-Zylinder-Sternmotor, 4 rows 7 cylinders, 73 litres capacity, 3,000 to 4,300 HP)
  • R-1690 Hornet (9-Zylinder-Sternmotor)

After that 2. World war strengthens the development and the building of jet engines operated. Admits became that

  • JT3/J57 also over 21.000 copies among other things for Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8, Boeing B-52, North American F-100 and Lockheed U-2, that
  • JT3D for Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8 or Boeing B-52 with 8.600 pieces, that
  • JT8D, available for Boeing 727, Boeing 737-100/-200, Douglas DC-9 and MD-80 as well as that
  • JT9D, which for Boeing 747, Boeing 767, the airbus A300, the airbus A310 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is suitable.

Current engines

Today the modern jet engines of Pratt & Whitney for airliners are recognizably from the type designation PW, like that as with the up-to-date offered

  • PW2000 turbofan, for Boeing 757, Ilyushin Il-96 and the C-17 Globemaster III, that
  • PW4000 (also PW400) turbofan, for Boeing 747, 767, 777, MD-11, airbus A300, A310, A330, and that
  • PW6000 turbofan, for the small airbus A318.

Apart from the production of engines in passenger airlines, combat aircraft (Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas (today Boeing)) and P & W build also high-delivery pumps, booster rockets and engines of the space shuttle, engines of the Centaur rocket stage as well as gas turbines for power stations for helicopter engines.

Together with Rolls-Royces and other enterprises in that internationally aero Engines (IAE) is produced the V2500 engine. For the building of the GP7200 of engine for the airbus A380 P & W as well as General Electric created the engine Alliance.

Pratt & Whitney Canada

Pratt & Whitney Canada build smaller airplane engines for business aircraft, regional air service aircrafts and helicopters.

  • JT 15 for small jets
  • PT6, a turbo-prop. turbine for many smaller types of aircraft and helicopters
  • PW100 turbo-prop. series, for example for ATR 42 and ATR 72
  • PW200, a helicopter turbine
  • PW300 turbofan for middle Business and regional jets
  • PW500 turbofan for the Cessna Citation
  • PW600F turbofan and PW600P turbo-prop. for small and tiny Business jets

Beyond that Pratt & Whitney Canada builds also auxiliary gas turbines Auxiliary power unit:

  • PW901A for Boeing 747-400
  • PW980A for the airbus A380 with an achievement like the turbo-props have.
