Pozzuoli (in Roman time lat. Puteoli = "small wells") is a place in the Italian region Kampanien, to the west of Neapel, at the gulf of Neapel. The city has 82,169 inhabitants (conditions to 31. May 2005).

Place and environment

The volcanically coined/shaped place is the most important center of the fields. On Gemeindegebiet is the Solfatara. Pozzuoli gave also the name to the Puzzolanerde. Only little landinward the ruins of the Macellum, a market are appropriate for the today's coastal line in the range of the antique port in the city center: About 4 m below the today's road level and 2 m below the today's sea level stand some column remainders, which exhibit 2.7 m starting from 3,6 m height upward a broad volume of holes of marine Bohrmuscheln. These are a voucher for the fact that the earth's crust lowered itself several times here and lifted since establishment of the buildings, so that the columns had sunk occasionally in mud and water.

A cause of the movements (amplitude altogether over 10 m) is that here everywhere transacts volcanism (e.g. fields, Vesuv). On and is partially expressed abrupt off: In the year 1538 developed few kilometers westward the volcano Monte Nuovo, which led with Pozzuoli in only 2 days to a soil elevation of 6 m. Also lately main header the area in the only 2 years between 1984 and 1986 around 1,8 M. brought itself large problems for the port with itself, and parts of the old part of town had to be vacated because of collapse danger (and until today were not reorganized).

The environment of Pozzuoli is, where it non like unfortunately predominantly - by land development and Zersiedelung was destroyed, landschaftlich extremely delightfully. To Pozzuoli e.g. also the volcanic island Nisida lain southeast belongs.

Economics

The place lives on the tourism and on fishing. The port is importantly for the numerous to the island Ischia.In Pozzuoli is the academy of the Italian Air Force.

Famous personalities

• in the 50's of the 1. Century went here the Apostel Paulus of Tarsus on its 4. Mission journey as Roman prisoners ashore, in order to Rome to be brought.
• 1736 died here the composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
• the actress Sophia trucks grew in Pozzuoli on (immediately after the birth 1934 in Rome).
