Physician chambers are carriers of the according to professional status autonomy of the physicians. They are responsible as bodies of the public right for the keeping of the vocational interests of the medical profession. Each physician is obligation member of the physician chamber (national physician chamber), in whose area it exercises its medical activity.

The tasks of the physician chambers are regulated by laws of the Lands of the Federal Republic (chamber laws) in each case. They cover generally:

• Development of statutes (statute of the physician chamber, occupation order, training further order)
• Acceptance of examinations (e.g. specialist examinations)
• Monitoring of the practise of the profession of the physicians
• Promotion of the medical advanced training
• Promotion of quality assurance measures
• Establishment of ethics commissions
• Agency of the professional interests of the physicians
• Support of the public health service and technical co-operation during the legislation
• Switching with disputes among physicians as well as between physician and patient
• Mechanism from consultant and arbitration boards to clarifying of treatment errors within the range of the physician adhesion
• Organization of the physician aid training
• Publication of an official report organ (physician sheet)
• Organization announcing and Beitragswesen for all members of the physician chamber
• Lead the physician statistics
• Enterprise of social mechanisms for physicians and their member

The national physician chambers are united on federal level to the Federal Medical Society, working group of the German physician chambers.

History

The history of the physician chambers begins 19 in the 80's. Century. By a royal regulation of 25. May 1887 "concerning the mechanism of a medical condition agency for Prussia" had been arranged the establishment by physician chambers in each province.

In the 3. The physician chambers became rich by the realm physician order from 13 December 1935 (RGBl. I P. 1433) coordinated. Thus the German physician association federation and the hard man federation were dissolved. Legal successors became the again created realm physician chamber and the cash-medical combination of Germany. After the Second World War the allied ones dissolved the realm physician chamber.

Afterwards in the western zones of occupation physician chambers had been able to again take up their work first on freiwilliger basis. First in Bavaria 1946 a national physician chamber was formed as a body of the public right, until 1962 in all other West German Lands of the Federal Republic and West Berlin. After 1990 physician chambers developed also in the five new Lands of the Federal Republic.
