Phaselis is an antique city in Pamphylien (small Asia, today Turkey), which is to approximately 53 km directly southwest from Antalya because of the coast. She is investigated since 1811 archaeologically and is, like Olympos, in the national park Olimpos Beydaglari far off the next modern locality. As commercial town with three ports in direct proximity to the Persian sphere of influence in small Asia it had up to the establishment of Attaleia (Antalya) around 150 v. History

The city is the sources after around 690 v. Chr. based as rhodische colony its. It belonged starting from approximately 550 v. Chr.) it became, although Pamphylien associated, under Roman rule to approximately 100 v. Chr. the Lyki federation integrated. The strong competitor Attaleia (Antalya) as port and commercial town brought a first fall, that to Phaselis it at the beginning of the 1. Century v. Chr. together with Olympos to a slip hole of kilikischer pirates to herunterkommen left.

Under Domitian, Trajan and Hadrian the city destroyed in the pirate wars became end of the 1. Century n. Chr. representatively again developed and experienced a second bloom. From this time most of the ruins received today originate. Of the later ideas of the Piraten and Arabs in the center 7. Century recovered Phaselis however never more, even if it as Byzantine fleet base in 8. Century temporarily again economically ascended. Since that 10. Jh. served it only as quarry for Antalya, which needed material for its attachments.

Excavations

Phaselis is on a small peninsula because of the foot of the Taurosgebirges. Few the hinterland is to a large extent swampy. Phaselis owed its singular meaning to the special form as city with three to a large extent natural ports. Generally speaking north port are still the antique breakwaters to be recognized. There leads also the emperor-temporal aquaduct received well on approximately 400 meters along to the city.

The so-called city port with its powerful quay walls is today a popular bath bay. From there the splendour road with the important Roman buildings, broad over 20 meters, leads both sides to the south port, which is protected by a wall. On the northwest side the three Agoren (market places) from the times line up Hadrians, Domitians and late ancient times. There are also remainders of the hot springs and Byzantine ruins. On the opposite southeast side one had established the city theatre in Hanglage. Above convenient Akropolis of Phaselis shows still house remainders of the last inhabitants, since that the 7. Had given up to century the city and on the ridge had entrenchd themselves. The remaining residential areas with roads and houses are almost completely threadbare.
