The largest Chinese oil company PetroChina is with a network of thousands of gas stations one of the turnover-strongest enterprises of the People's Republic. The oil is national a subsidiary national China petroleum Corp. (CNPC).

PetroChina invested up to now five billion dollar abroad, half of it in the Sudan. Close one of the Sudanese capital Khartum was built a 1600 kilometers long pipeline to the Red Sea as well as a refinery with a capacity by 2.5 million tons. Peking is the most important foreign investor in the Sudan. The African country produces roughly eight per cent of the Chinese oil imported goods.

On 13 November 2005 it came into the Chemifabrik No. 110, the PetroChina of subsidiary company Jilin petroleum and Chemical company, to a chemistry accident, in which the factory exploded and which Songhua Jiang was contaminated. Since the river serves the potable water supply in the region as basis, the potable water supply had to be partly interrupted. Of it also the metropolis Harbin was concerned.
